The devil made me do it!

Have you heard that line before? I’m guessing you have—though in Christian circles you are more likely to hear, ‘it was a spiritual attack’ to explain away a bad choice or a consequence that resulted from a bad choice.

We sure try hard to shift the blame don’t we?

How many times do we lash out because ‘she triggered my issues’ or ‘he pushed all my buttons’?

Paul wipes away all our excuses for sinful behavior in Romans 8:9:

“But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have he Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.)”

If you have Jesus Christ living inside of you, sin has no control over you any more! You are not sin’s slave, you are free. If you sin, it’s because you choose to, not because circumstances ‘made’ you do it.

(I know, I want to say ‘ouch’ too!)

Spiritual attacks are very real, and of course we are not immune to the stresses and pressures we experience from others, but with God living inside of us we are without excuse when it comes to the choices we make.

We may be powerless in our own strength, but God always gives us a way out of temptation and provides HIS strength to take that escape route—if we’re willing to surrender to Him and walk…(or run!)… away from whatever hurt, habit, or hang-up is trying to catch up with us.

May you choose God’s way of escape this week.

Blessings,
