Sometimes I dread the fact that God looks at my heart—I can be doing everything ‘right’ on the outside yet have the worst attitude on the inside!

At other times I’m so very glad God looks at my heart! Frankly, I can really mess something up but be truly seeking God and trying to please Him. It is a relief then to know God sees and understands my heart’s motivation even if things are less than perfect in my life.

Motivation is a key player in the walk of recovery.

If your motive for recovery is to just ‘look good’, you will fail. If you’re motive is to please somebody in your life, you will fail. Even if your motive is to save your marriage, you will fail! The only motivation that has real staying power is the desire to have God change YOUR heart so you can please Him and be faithful to your higher power, Jesus Christ.

If your heart is properly focused on Christ, then you can be confident as you take each step in your recovery.

Colossians 1:3-5 “We always pray for you and we give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard that you trust in Christ Jesus and that you love all of God’s people. You do this because you are looking forward to the joys of heaven—as you have been ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.”

The way to grow a powerful relationship with God is to let Him continue to refine your heart.

We can trust Christ and love others the way God wants us to only when our motivation is to please Him first of all and keep our focus on the more eternal joys of heaven.

May you be powerfully motivated to let God do His work in you this week.
